Dr Kate Abel

Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (FRANZCOG)

I’m a Melbourne-based obstetrician and gynaecologist committed to providing you with exceptional, personalised, and evidence-based pregnancy care. I believe in empowering you to make the choices that best suit your values and needs throughout your journey.

In addition to my private practice, I have a public appointment at the Mercy Hospital for Women, consulting in general pregnancy and perinatal medicine clinics (including maternal-fetal medicine, recurrent miscarriage, and diabetes), the early pregnancy assessment clinic, and endosurgery gynaecology units. I manage the tertiary-level Birth Suite on a regular basis and maintain frequent operating lists and ultrasound sessions.

I have extensive experience in both high-risk obstetrics and low-risk normal pregnancies. My specific expertise includes managing cervical insufficiency and pregnancies at high risk of pre-term birth, with significant experience in the insertion of elective and emergency cervical cerclages. My professional background also includes managing twin pregnancies.

I provide specialised care for vaginal birth after caesarean section (VBAC), diabetes in pregnancy, and complex medical conditions. I’m especially experienced in complex caesarean sections and instrumental vaginal births. With deep personal understanding and professional expertise in IVF pregnancies, I offer empathetic care for families facing fertility challenges.

My practice is proudly inclusive, welcoming all patients and families, including single parents, members of the LGBTIQA+ community, heterosexual couples, gestational surrogates, and intended parents.
